to cheer up

UAAP cheerdance fans, Araneta Coliseum
Cubao, Quezon City

The UAAP Cheerdance competition is an annual event where the official cheering squads of every UAAP member universities compete for the prestige, the record and the cash prize. This year’s event was held last month, either September 6 or 7 I can’t remember. I went to the place with my sister but she was the only one who actually saw the event with her friends. I roamed around Araneta Center to take photos instead. That means I don’t have any with the performances as subject.

According to Wikipedia this year’s event hold the record for the total number of spectators- 23,443. Most of them are students around college level, especially from member universities. University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas supporters are always the two largest crowds. These two universities are considered cheerdancing powerhouses, and they enjoy a hyped rivalry most likely because these two, along with Far Eastern University who usually rounds up the top 3, are the only consistent squads in recent cheerdancing history. But that doesn’t stop the fans, students and alumni of the remaining 5 squads from wishing their respective squads well.

On the image we see UAAP fans in their school colors, with cheering paraphernalia. The guy in the middle wears a red shirt but sports a yellow balloon sculpted to signify tamaraw horns. Most of the people in the photo are college students. They all look too young nowadays.
